The global aluminum market continued to display positive momentum as supply-side factors remained the primary driver supporting prices. Declining inventories in both China and the London Metal Exchange (LME) system have reinforced market sentiment, although seasonal weakness in downstream demand continues to limit the pace of price appreciation.
On the Shanghai Futures Exchange (SHFE), aluminum prices continued to outperform those on the LME. This resilience is largely attributed to China’s tightly managed domestic supply, supported by government capacity controls, while inventories have continued to decline steadily.
According to the latest market data, China’s annualized electrolytic aluminum operating capacity stands at approximately 45.31 million metric tons, close to the country’s policy-imposed production ceiling. Meanwhile, domestic aluminum ingot inventories fell by approximately 54,800 metric tons during the past week, despite the market entering its traditional low-demand season.
In the international market, LME cash aluminum prices rose by approximately 0.34%, while LME warehouse inventories continued to decline to around 262,650 metric tons. The inventory drawdown reflects persistent concerns over the availability of supply in the global market.
One of the key issues attracting market attention is the severe flooding in Sichuan Province, a strategically important region within China’s aluminum supply chain. The adverse weather conditions have raised concerns over potential disruptions to production operations as well as transportation and logistics. At the same time, Alcoa’s decision to lower its alumina production guidance has further intensified concerns about tightening raw material supply.
Despite these supportive supply-side developments, demand conditions remain relatively subdued. Downstream manufacturers continue to operate under the influence of the seasonal consumption slowdown, with new orders yet to show a meaningful recovery. As a result, the market has not gained sufficient demand-driven momentum to sustain a stronger price rally.
According to industry analysts, current aluminum price movements are being driven primarily by supply fundamentals rather than improving consumption. The continued decline in inventories across both China and the LME indicates that available market supply is tightening, providing a solid foundation for prices in the near term. However, analysts emphasize that a sustained bullish trend will ultimately require a meaningful recovery in demand from key sectors such as construction, transportation, power infrastructure, and manufacturing.
Market experts also believe that inventory trends will remain one of the most closely watched indicators in the coming weeks. If inventories continue to decline beyond the seasonal low-demand period, it would suggest that underlying consumption is beginning to recover, creating room for further price appreciation. Conversely, should inventories begin to rebuild while China’s aluminum smelting capacity remains near record-high levels, the market could face renewed downward pressure as supply outpaces demand.
Overall, the aluminum market continues to benefit from tightening supply conditions and declining inventories, providing constructive support for prices in the short term. Nevertheless, the next phase of the market will largely depend on the pace of demand recovery once seasonal consumption improves.
